Trauma Counselling

Life is very unpredictable and can often result in individuals experiencing devastating events from which they cannot be protected. Trauma results in irrational brain processing, which tricks the brain into believing that most unanticipated situations are dangerous. This often leads to catastrophising, neuroses and high levels of anxiety, depression and panic attacks. Trauma, in essence, is a normal response to abnormal situations.

Types of trauma

There are generally four main types of trauma:

  • Acute trauma: Brought on from a single traumatic incident
  • Chronic trauma: Experiencing the same traumatic event repeatedly
  • Complex trauma: Brought on from being exposed to various traumatic events
  • Secondary trauma: When you experience second-hand trauma from an individual who has been through a traumatic event

Trauma and PTSD

The most common psychological outcome of trauma is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD can impact a person’s ability to work, live and form healthy relationships.

Coping with trauma

If you have experienced a traumatic incident and your symptoms extend past a month, consider seeking professional help. Trauma counselling provides a safe space for trauma survivors to speak about their experiences and be vulnerable with their feelings. Different therapies can work for different traumas depending on the severity and longevity. I offer an eclectic treatment plan with trauma ranging from Brain-Working Recursive Therapy to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.
